The 308 Subland/Step Angle Sharpener and Drill Pointer has a diameter range which includes the vast majority of the multiple diameter tools used by many metal removal manufacturing firms.

The 308 is a dual purpose machine aimed at step angle sharpening AND drill pointing of 2, 3,4 flute, single or multiple diameter cutting tools. It is manually operated for oscillation and infeed for economy, with positive stops for cross traverse, forward feeding and drill point location which gives accurate maintenance of step lengths and lip heights, lip to lip and drill to drill.

Built in dressing diamonds, coolant reservoir and pump, variable point and step angles by scale and automatic correct drill lip clearance by diameter of drill, make this a high quality but economical machine.

Where large quantities of multiple diameter drills are being resharpened, we recommend the compatible 302 drill sharpener for pointing conjunction with the 308 being reserved for step and sharpening. For large quantity sharpening, the savings in time of change over from step angle sharpening to pointing (which often required the change of the grinding wheel) will more than offset the cost of having both machines in tandem. Where quantity of multiple diameter tools to be resharpened is relatively small, however, the 308 is an efficient, economical and quality multi-purpose sharpening machine.

Features of Operation:

1. FORWARD FEED/POSITIVE STOPS provide easy, accurate grinding of radial relief step angles, variable by setting, equal side to side.

2. CROSS FEED/POSITIVE STOPS provide easy, accurate grinding of radial relief drill points; variable angles by setting, equal lip to lip.

3. GRIND LIMIT STOPS prevent excessive undercutting of grinding into areas not desired.

4. WHEEL PERIPHERY DRESSING infeed and diamond are built in for fast and easy dressing of the grinding wheel for pointing & step angle sharpening.

5. WHEEL CHAMFER DRESSING diamond and wheel are built in for step angle sharpening, Chamfer required is set by step angle being ground.

6. DRILL HOLDING UNIT incorporates jaw holding for centered point or step angle. Easy loading, counterbalanced.

7. TAILSTOCK CENTERS and positive front stop provide easy loading, positive control of step lengths

The Superior Drill Holding Method requires only three pairs of jaw bits to hold all two flute drills from 1/8" through 1-1/2" diameters.

The drill is positioned by the tailstock center and the upper fixed jaw, and then gripped by tightening down the lower jaw. These jaws locate inside the flute and behind the land (as illustrated). This method of locating and holding ensures a correctly centered point or step angle, even if original flute indexing of the drill were inaccurate, and also prevents any damage to the lands of the drill.
